Roles and Responsibilities of Various Lines of Defence
About Course
Effective risk management depends on more than policies, controls, and reporting structures. It depends on clear roles, accountable decision-making, reliable oversight, independent assurance, and a culture that supports responsible behaviour.
This course introduces learners to the roles and responsibilities of the various lines of defence within an organisation. It explains how risk is owned and managed by the first line, how the second line provides oversight, advice, monitoring, and challenge, and how the third line provides independent assurance. It also explores the role of senior management, boards, committees, and governance structures in ensuring that risk information is accurate, issues are escalated, and weaknesses are remediated effectively.
This course is designed for employees, supervisors, managers, senior leaders, risk and compliance professionals, internal audit teams, governance specialists, and board or committee members who need to understand how risk responsibilities are assigned, coordinated, challenged, assured, and governed across an organisation.
Throughout the course, learners will examine how the lines of defence work together in practice. The focus is not only on understanding the model, but on recognising how it can fail when ownership is unclear, reporting creates false assurance, challenge is ignored, remediation is superficial, or culture rewards the wrong behaviour.
By using practical examples, scenarios, and judgement-based questions, this course helps learners understand how effective coordination, governance, and risk culture support better decision-making and stronger organisational resilience.
